MOCA at 215 Centre Street
The Museum of Chinese in America has bought 215 Centre Street. Built in 1915 the former home of The Grand Machinery Company is a 6-floor structure with roughly 40,000 sq ft of space. MOCA has occupied the basement and ground floors since 2009 the museum bought the building for $51.1m recently.
The museum’s 70 Mulberry Street location was lost after a devastating fire in 2020 but the majority of it’s archives were rescued. The NYC DDC recently released a final design for the restoration of 70 Mulberry and the procurement process is underway with restoration slated to begin Oct of 2024.
A conceptual drawing of the new museum designed by Maya Lin was released by MOCA earlier this year. No word when construction will begin or whether MOCA will surrender its lease in the restored 70 Mulberry Street community building.
