In the aftermath of the deadly parking garage collapse on Ann Street on April 18 New York city DOB Department of Buildings inspectors were dispatched to inspect the structural integrity of similar structures in the 5 boroughs and one in Chinatown failed to pass muster.
The garage under The Bridgeview condos located at 50 Bayard Street was found to have violations serious enough to be ordered vacated.
The garage with an entrance at 38 bowery and operated by Icon Parking notified customers on April 26 to remove their vehicles and offered them a temporary spot at a sister location at 299 Pearl Street in nearby FiDi the financial district. Customers were given no scheduled completion date for repairs.
The 167-unit Bridgeview Condos built in 1962 was the newest housing development in Chinatown of the era and its underground garage operated as The Rickshaw garage had served tenants and the community for decades .
