Conceptual Drawing of new building 277 Canal Street

Chinatown / SoHo renovation plan gets green light from LPC (landmarks preservation commission). In a move that will re-shape the corner of Canal Street and Broadway, the LPC approved a plan to add 11 floors to the existing building at 277 Canal Street. The proposed “new” structure will feature 100 units of housing with 25 units earmarked for affordable housing. The lower levels will have commercial spaces. The Soho / NoHo restructuring plan had met with stiff opposition by those who feared the character of the neighborhood would be lost and increase rents.

Corner of Canal and Broadway currently 277 Canal Street

277 Canal built in 1927 sits on top of the Broadway / Canal St station of the IRT 6 train and once was home to The Pearl River Mart located on the 2nd & 3rd floors until their move further up Broadway in SoHo.

Proposal submitted to LPC

The developer’s plan includes brick textured exterior finishes in an attempt to better fit into the neighborhood’s existing profile of cast iron structures which housed the heart of NYCs textile industry showrooms.
