Good Field Trading 74-B Mott Street

Chinatown’s oldest bookstore is closing Aug 31 after decades in business. Opened in the early 1970s the shop offered Chinese language magazines from overseas, comic books, Chinese brush pens, stationary supplies, games, auspicious wall hangings along with a large selection of romance & martial arts novels. The shop played an important role in the community for new immigrants in a time before personal computers or the internet.

Harvard Tang who has operated Good Field after serving in the military is retiring..

Good Field was only shop in Chinatown which carried large selection of Red Envelopes (Hung Boa) with family surnames.

Hak Box another favorite snack destination for old school locals seeking that Hakka Taste.

Hak Box served up its last Dried shrimp rice rolls, dumplings and stuffed tofu specialties on Aug 13. The business has seen a drop in sales since the start of 2023.

Commuter favorite rice roll cart by the Canal Street N/Q line is calling it quits on Aug 31.

Mrs Leung who has operated the cart is retiring after 24 years on Centre Street. Long a favorite with commuters looking for a quick breakfast or lunch the cart served up rice rolls, tea infused eggs and other snacks.

Mrs. Leung normally rises at 3am daily to prepare items for sale before loading the cart and pushing it to Centre Street in rain, snow, heat & cold.
