The NYC DDC hosted a community town hall Friday July 28 at the Transfiguration Church. Roughly 150 community members mainly seniors attended the town hall curious to see how the restored building would appear. Attendees were invited to write comments on post-it notes or vote for an amenity in the community spaces.
Model of restored 70 Mulberry street .
The design incorporates solar panels along the facade on exposed sides of the building to meet carbon reduction requirements. The restored former PS23 would be 5 stories with and additional 2 set-back.
The former PS23 was lost to the community in February of 2020 due to a devastating fire attributed to catastrophic electrical failure..
The restoration will also include a floor of community space accessible to the public through a reservation system managed by DCAS (department of citywide services) through an online booking process.
Currently the restoration is in the procurement process and construction is scheduled for the fall of 2024 with completion in 2027.
