Predatory Enforcement

Mr Huang’s fruit stand along Mott Street

NYC Department of Consumer Affairs agents are again targeting local brick and mortar businesses for trivial violations. Mr Huang (sic) was recently ticketed by a DCA inspector for violating the 3-foot rule, the questionable violation revolves around 2 boxes of vegetables 4 inches beyond the 3-foot stand’s edge. Mr Huang who had operated the business for 20 years signed in frustration and muttered he may have to close due to the many unlicensed vendors clogging the sidewalks along Mott Street, “I have to pay rent, and they do not, and I get ticketed because I can’t run” proclaimed Mr Huang. “We store owners can’t run and have to pay the fines, the street peddlers can so they target us”.

Other business owners along the stretch of Mott Street between Hester St and Grand St echo the sentiment, “they sell the same vegetables I do and take away business by selling a little cheaper” remarked one on condition of anonymity.
